I am thrilled to announce a significant milestone in Holyoke’s revitalization efforts. Today marks the official start of demolition and cleanup of the former Parsons Paper Company located at 84 Sargeant Street. The Parsons Paper building for decades stood as a symbol of Holyoke’s industrial era until a 2008 fire caused extensive damage.
Holyoke-based Aegis Energy Services will stay and grow in our city, expanding its business into the 4.7-acre Parsons site. This project will create at least 30 new jobs and significantly reduce blight in the canal district as we continue to revitalize this area of the city. The expansion of Aegis Energy Services will entail a private investment of approximately $7 million as well as the creation of up to 4 megawatts of renewable energy, making it Holyoke’s largest manufacturing expansion in years. Cleanup of the site is being made possible by a total of $3.5 million in funds amassed through the Holyoke Redevelopment Authority.
The staff in the office of Planning and Economic Development and the Law Department should be applauded for their efforts as they’ve worked diligently with the Holyoke Redevelopment Authority and a cross-collaboration of public and private partners to make this project a reality.
From the ashes of a once thriving paper mill, we are building a better city.
